Planning a dreamy surprise proposal in Yosemite takes more than finding a beautiful view. You have to think through the timing, location, positioning, cover story, and all the little details that keep the surprise intact. For Trystan and Gabi, we planned their entire Yosemite proposal in about two weeks, creating a plan that would feel completely natural to Gabi while giving Trystan everything he needed to feel prepared.
Trystan and Gabi are both military pilots based in Pensacola, and they had a short window of time off before returning to work. With only a couple of weeks to work with, we moved quickly to plan their proposal at Tunnel View, followed by newly engaged portraits throughout Yosemite Valley. Here’s a peek!

Planning the Perfect Yosemite Surprise Proposal
About a week before their proposal, Trystan and I jumped on a Zoom call to work through all the details. We talked through exactly where he would stand, where I would photograph from, and how we could make the entire thing feel like a normal couples session.
I also sent Trystan a video showing him how to get to our meeting spot so he would feel confident getting there that morning. We even created a code word in case I needed a little more time to get into position. If I said “Bingo,” Trystan knew to wait another ten minutes before bringing Gabi over.
For the cover story, Trystan told Gabi they were meeting a photographer named Morgan for couples photos. I arrived about 15 minutes early and played the part of a landscape photographer waiting for sunrise. When they arrived, Trystan asked if I was Morgan. I told him I wasn’t.
He then asked if I could take a photo of them with his phone. Once I took the photo, Trystan turned to Gabi and proposed. She genuinely had no idea it was coming!

A Dreamy Surprise Proposal at Tunnel View
The proposal unfolded exactly as we had planned. I was already in position with the perfect angle, and the soft sunrise light over Yosemite Valley made the moment feel even more incredible.
Gabi’s reaction was completely genuine, which is one of my favorite parts of photographing surprise proposals. There’s something so special about knowing that the person you’re photographing has no idea what’s about to happen and getting to preserve that moment exactly as it unfolds.
The mountains, morning light, and quiet of Tunnel View gave them a beautiful setting for such a huge moment. But just as important, the plan allowed Trystan to actually enjoy it instead of worrying about what came next.

Newly Engaged Photos Around Yosemite Valley
After the surprise was over, we didn’t just pack up and leave. We spent the rest of the morning exploring Yosemite Valley and celebrating their engagement with relaxed portraits.
We visited the Yosemite Valley Chapel, Cooks Meadow, and Valley View, taking advantage of the different scenery throughout the valley. There were waterfall views, the river, open meadows, and plenty of time for the two of them to simply enjoy being engaged.
I love that the photos in their gallery start with the raw emotion of a completely unexpected proposal and slowly settle into something more playful and intimate. The warm morning light and incredible Yosemite scenery gave us plenty of variety. Plus, their natural interactions kept the photos feeling like them.

Client Testimonial
“Alyssa is an exceptional photographer! Was in search of one for a surprise proposal last minute. Scheduled a meeting and she took the lead from there. Easy to communicate with and very receptive to client input for shoot ideas. Her kind demeanor and uplifting comments during the shoot made it so much fun. The vision I had in mind for the proposal she helped bring to life!” — Trystan

More Than Just a Yosemite Proposal Photographer
For a dreamy surprise proposal in Yosemite, the photography is only one piece of the experience. A big part of my job is helping you figure out how to make the proposal actually work. That can mean choosing the right location, planning the timing around sunrise and crowds, figuring out exactly where everyone should stand, creating a believable cover story, and making sure you know where you’re going before the big day.
For Trystan, that meant having a detailed plan, a backup communication system, and a photographer already waiting at Tunnel View pretending to be someone else. And somehow, Gabi never suspected a thing.
If you’re planning a surprise proposal in Yosemite, I’ve put together a guide to some of the best locations for a Yosemite proposal to help you start thinking about where your own proposal could take place.
