Laura & Joshua’s Yosemite Maternity Photos at Glacier Point

Yosemite maternity photos at Glacier Point can be so much more than traditional maternity portraits. For Laura and Joshua, their session at Glacier Point was a chance to celebrate their growing family while incorporating the things that already feel like them, which were spending time outdoors, exploring Yosemite, and making memories together.

Laura was 23 weeks pregnant during their session. They wanted most of their photos to focus on the two of them together, rather than having the session center entirely around solo maternity portraits. We also wanted to create a pregnancy announcement that felt personal to their story, so we planned a two-hour adventure session that gave us plenty of time to do both. Have a look!

Starting Before Sunrise for their Yosemite Maternity Photos at Glacier Point

We met at Glacier Point at 6:00 a.m., giving us time to start photographing before the 6:15 sunrise. Arriving early made a huge difference. We were able to begin with the softest light of the morning and watch the landscape change as the sun came up over Yosemite.

Laura wore a white top with a flowing burgundy skirt, while Joshua wore coordinating neutrals. The combination felt romantic without competing with the scenery, especially with Half Dome and the surrounding mountains behind them.

They also brought along their ultrasound photos, incorporating them into some of the images as they explored different areas around Glacier Point. We moved between overlooks, trails, trees, and the Geological Hut, creating a lot of variety without ever needing to leave the area.

That is one of my favorite things about longer adventure sessions in Yosemite. You don’t necessarily need to cover a huge amount of ground to create a gallery that feels varied. With two hours, we could slow down, explore different spots, let the light change, and photograph the little interactions that happened naturally along the way.

A Personal Pregnancy Announcement

For the second half of their session, Laura and Joshua changed into casual jeans and layered neutral outfits. The entire feel of the session shifted with the outfit change. Instead of the more romantic, cinematic look from the beginning of the morning, these photos became playful and relaxed.

They brought along a few meaningful props to create a pregnancy announcement inspired by their love of camping and the outdoors. We used camping chairs, a tiny baby chair, backward Mom and Dad hats, their ultrasound photos, and three pairs of hiking boots.

We also created a playful pregnancy announcement video, giving them something they could share beyond their photo gallery.

I loved that the props felt like a natural extension of their story rather than decorations added simply for the sake of having a pregnancy announcement setup. The camping chairs and hiking boots made sense for them, and they fit beautifully into the Yosemite landscape.

Why Two Hours Makes a Difference

A two-hour Yosemite maternity session gives you room to create an entire story instead of rushing through a short list of poses. For Laura and Joshua, that meant starting before sunrise, photographing multiple outfits, incorporating their ultrasound photos, creating a pregnancy announcement video, and giving them time to explore several areas around Glacier Point.

It also meant we didn’t have to choose between beautiful maternity portraits and photos that felt personal to them. We had enough time for both!
