As a Yosemite elopement photographer, I love getting to document days that feel completely personal to the couple. Ally and Jimmy’s sunrise Glacier Point elopement was a perfect example of that. They traveled from Reno with 22 of their closest family members and their golden retriever.

Yosemite National Park and specifically Glacier Point already held a special place in their relationship. They’ve always been big adventurers, and one of their bucket list goals is to climb Half Dome together. They’ve visited Yosemite several times and knew Glacier Point was their favorite view in the park. The first time they saw it together, they knew it was where they wanted to promise forever to each other.

A Sunrise First Look at Glacier Point

We met at Glacier Point at 5:00am, long before their ceremony was scheduled to begin. Ally spent some time getting ready with her mom and sister before we moved into their first look.

The early start was completely worth it. The light was beautiful, the overlook was quiet, and they had time to enjoy the view before their families arrived. We spent the next hour exploring Glacier Point and taking sunrise portraits while they settled into the morning. Since our plan was to stay at Glacier Point for the entire morning, we had room to slow down and let each part flow naturally. 

A Private Cake Cutting Before the Ceremony

One of my favorite parts of their Glacier Point elopement was their cake cutting picnic. Before the ceremony, Ally and Jimmy sat down together on the ground with their cake and enjoyed a private moment just for the two of them. It was simple and sweet, and it gave them a chance to pause before their families joined them.

These little pieces of the morning are one of the reasons I love photographing elopements. You can build those moments into your day wherever they make sense!

An Intimate Glacier Point Ceremony

At 7:00am, Ally and Jimmy exchanged their vows at the Glacier Point Amphitheater with 22 family members there to celebrate with them. Ally’s brother officiated the ceremony, which made the moment even more personal.

They had both written their own vows, but Ally had also been working on something special. She learned her vows in Chinese so Jimmy’s parents could hear her express her love and gratitude for their son in their own language. That detail meant so much to her. It was a beautiful way to include his family and make the ceremony feel like a reflection of both of their families.

After the ceremony, they shared their first dance before moving into family photos.

Changing Into a Traditional Chinese Wedding Dress

One of the most fun parts of the morning came after the ceremony. Ally changed out of her first wedding dress and into a traditional red Chinese wedding dress, called a qipao. While she changed, we photographed some of the details and gave her family time to get ready for the next part of the celebration.

Once she was dressed, Ally and Jimmy held a Chinese tea ceremony with their families. The tea ceremony was especially meaningful because it gave Ally the opportunity to honor Jimmy’s Chinese heritage and formally celebrate with his family. It was also a completely different visual moment from the earlier part of the day.

We followed the tea ceremony with a champagne and cider toast, then took a few more portraits with their golden retriever before wrapping up the morning.

What Made Their Sunrise Glacier Point Elopement So Personal?

There were so many thoughtful details woven throughout Ally and Jimmy’s day, but none of them felt like they were there simply for the sake of having more wedding traditions. Everything connected back to who they are.

They chose Glacier Point because of their history with Yosemite and their love of adventure. They started their wedding day before sunrise because they wanted to experience the park together just the two of them. They included their families in an intimate ceremony and then made space for traditions that were important to Jimmy’s family. And, even their dog got to be part of the celebration! 

Their wedding day was romantic without being overly formal. I loved how there was plenty of structure, but there was also time to simply enjoy being together.

Planning a Sunrise Glacier Point Elopement

Starting a wedding day at Glacier Point before sunrise does require some planning, especially when you’re bringing family along. Ally and Jimmy’s timeline worked because we gave ourselves plenty of time before the ceremony for getting ready, their first look, sunrise portraits, and their private cake cutting. Then, once their families arrived, we were ready to move into the ceremony without having to rush through everything beforehand.

This kind of timeline planning makes a big difference for an elopement. You can have a full morning with multiple parts to the celebration without making the day feel like a checklist.
