Marcus and Atlanta’s Winter Sunrise Elopement in Yosemite

Marcus and Atlanta’s winter sunrise elopement in Yosemite was the kind of wedding day that proves you don’t need a packed itinerary to have an incredible experience. They wanted something simple and stress-free, with plenty of time to enjoy Yosemite and focus on each other. As a Yosemite elopement photographer, I loved helping them create a morning that felt relaxed while still giving them plenty of beautiful places to explore.

From a Bass Lake Proposal to a Yosemite Elopement

Their story started with a quiet proposal at Bass Lake. During a getaway, Marcus asked Atlanta to walk down to the lake with him at sunset. With the lake glowing behind them and the sky turning golden, he proposed. It was a private moment that set the tone for how they wanted their wedding day to feel, too.

For their elopement, Marcus and Atlanta wanted to avoid the pressure that can come with a large wedding. They wanted their morning to be about the two of them and the place they had chosen to get married.

Accessibility was also an important part of planning their day. Marcus has a knee injury, and Atlanta didn’t want to spend hours hiking. Instead, we built their Yosemite elopement around locations that were easy to access while still offering incredible scenery.

A Sunrise First Look and Ceremony at Tunnel View

We started the morning at Tunnel View before sunrise. As the first light came in, El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Fall began to glow across the valley. Marcus and Atlanta shared a private first look before exchanging their vows and rings. They signed their marriage license shortly afterward, officially making it a very early start to their new chapter.

Atlanta wore a flowing white dress, while Marcus wore a green suit. The colors worked so well with the greens, granite, and softer morning light throughout Yosemite Valley.

Exploring Yosemite Valley After Their Ceremony

After their ceremony, we spent the rest of the morning exploring Yosemite Valley. We stopped at Cook’s Meadow, Half Dome Meadow, the Yosemite Chapel area, and Yosemite Falls, along with a few quieter spots along the way.

Because we weren’t working around a long hike, we could take our time at each location. We walked, stopped for portraits, and enjoyed the scenery without trying to squeeze too much into the morning.

That’s one of my favorite things about planning an accessible Yosemite elopement. You can still visit some of the park’s most iconic locations without turning your wedding day into an endurance event.

Cake at Lower Yosemite Falls

After exploring the valley, Marcus and Atlanta had one more celebration planned… cake! They picked up a small cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes in Fresno and brought it along for the day. We found a spot near Lower Yosemite Falls, where they sat down and cut the cake together. And instead of worrying about having all the traditional cake-cutting supplies, they used forks.

It was simple, playful, and completely fit the feel of their morning.

A Simple Yosemite Elopement That Felt Like Them

One of the best parts of working with Marcus and Atlanta was how easily they trusted the process. They didn’t need a complicated timeline or a long list of activities to make their wedding day feel special. The morning was about being together, seeing Yosemite at sunrise, and celebrating in ways that felt natural to them.

Their advice for other couples planning a Yosemite elopement is simple: prioritize each other, take in your surroundings, and give yourself permission to slow down. You don’t have to fill every minute of your wedding day for it to be worth remembering. For Marcus and Atlanta, a quiet sunrise, a few beautiful locations, and cake at the base of Yosemite Falls were more than enough.
