I’ve had couples start their Yosemite elopement in dress shoes or heels and immediately feel relieved once they changed into something more comfortable. The shift is noticeable. They’re more relaxed, more willing to explore, and far more focused on each other than on their feet.
What Shoes Work Best for a Yosemite Elopement?

Cowboy boots are one of my favorite elopement shoe options in Yosemite. They fit the adventurous feel of a national park wedding and photograph beautifully against the landscape.
Many of my couples wear cowboy boots throughout Yosemite Valley without any issues. They’re especially great for locations with shorter walks and easier access. That said, some cowboy boots can become slippery on granite or dusty trails depending on the sole. I’ve photographed couples whose boots worked perfectly at locations like Tunnel View or Cook’s Meadow but felt less secure on steeper trails.
If you’re planning on wearing cowboy boots, I recommend testing them ahead of time and considering traction pads if needed. For longer hikes, it can also be helpful to bring hiking shoes as a backup.
Hiking Boots vs. Trail Runners
For couples planning a more active day, like Claudia and Kelly, hiking boots and trail runners are usually the most practical choices.
Hiking boots are ideal for rough terrain, snowy conditions, colder weather, and longer hikes. They provide additional support and tend to perform well on Yosemite’s more challenging trails. If you’re planning a hiking elopement or getting married during the winter, hiking boots are often the better choice.
Trail runners are lightweight, breathable, and extremely comfortable. They work especially well for spring, summer, and fall elopements that involve moderate walking rather than strenuous hiking. Many couples love them because they feel less bulky while still providing great traction.
Neither option is inherently better. It simply depends on your plans for the day!

Traditional heels can be difficult in Yosemite. Even locations with minimal walking often include dirt, rocks, roots, or uneven terrain. Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives that still look great in photos.

This is one of the biggest mistakes I see couples make! Brand-new shoes often feel great for a few minutes but become uncomfortable after several hours of walking. Blisters can quickly turn into a distraction, especially during longer elopement days.
Wear your shoes around town, take them on walks, or bring them on a short hike before your wedding day. A little preparation goes a long way!
Don’t Be Afraid to Change Shoes Throughout the Day
Many couples assume they need to wear one pair of shoes all day. That’s rarely the case.
It’s extremely common for couples to hike in trail runners or hiking boots, then switch into dressier shoes for their ceremony and portraits.
I’ve photographed brides who changed out of heels halfway through the day and immediately looked more relaxed. I’ve also worked with couples who carried multiple shoe options in their backpacks and switched throughout the day depending on the location. There’s no rule saying you have to choose just one pair!

Winter Yosemite elopements are incredible, but they require additional preparation. Snow, ice, and wet trails can create slippery conditions.
