Where to Get Your Yosemite Elopement Marriage License (Step-by-Step Guide)

Planning a Yosemite National Park elopement comes with a lot of exciting decisions. Getting your Yosemite elopement marriage license is usually the part that feels the most confusing.

The good news is that it’s actually very simple once you understand the process!

As a Yosemite elopement photographer, this is something I guide my couples through step-by-step. When you hire me, you won’t be left figuring out the elopement planning and logistics parts on your own.

Before we get into the details, here’s what matters most. You must have a California marriage license before your ceremony. You can get it from any county in California, which means you aren’t limited to Yosemite’s county. This makes planning much easier!

The Big Picture: How a Yosemite Elopement Marriage License Works

Here’s a quick look at how the process works from start to finish:

1. Get your marriage license before your elopement.
2. Bring it with you on your wedding day.
3. Sign it after your ceremony.
4. Return it to the county to be recorded.

Both partners need to be present to get the license, and there’s no waiting period in California. Once it’s issued, it’s valid for 90 days. After your ceremony, it usually needs to be returned within about 10 days.

Once you understand this flow, everything else becomes much more straightforward.

Where to Get Your Yosemite Elopement Marriage License

One of the biggest things couples don’t realize when planning a Yosemite elopement is that you don’t have to get your license in the same county where you’re getting married.

You can go anywhere in California. This gives you flexibility based on your travel plans, which makes things much easier to fit into your timeline.

Here are the most common options:

Mariposa County Clerk’s Office (Closest to Yosemite)

The Mariposa County Clerk’s Office is the most popular option for Yosemite elopements.

It’s the closest county to the park, so it works well if you’re already staying nearby. Most couples schedule an appointment for the day before their elopement so everything is taken care of ahead of time.

Appointments are required (call to book), and both partners need to be present. The cost is usually around $60–$65.

If you’re staying near Yosemite, this is often the easiest choice!

Fresno County Clerk’s Office (Best for airport access)

If you’re flying into Fresno, the Fresno County Clerk’s Office is a really convenient option.

You can stop here before driving into Yosemite, which makes it easy to check this off your list early. It fits naturally into a travel day, especially if you’re arriving the day before your elopement.

Appointments are required, and you can book one online.

Madera County Clerk’s Office (Underrated Option!)

The Madera County Clerk’s Office is a great alternative, especially if you’re entering from the south.

It tends to be a bit less busy, which can make the experience feel more relaxed. The process and pricing are very similar to other counties. You can book an appointment online.

What to Bring to Your Appointment When Getting Your Yosemite Elopement Marriage License

This part is simple, but it’s so important to come prepared!

You’ll need a valid photo ID, like a driver’s license or passport. If either of you has been married before, you’ll also likely need a copy of dissolution/decree.

Payment requirements vary by county, and some are cash only, so it’s worth calling ahead of time to ensure you have the most up-to-date information. Occasionally, a birth certificate may be requested, but that’s not always required.

When to Get Your Yosemite Elopement Marriage License

Timing getting your Yosemite marriage license well helps your day feel much more relaxed.

You can get your license up to 90 days before your elopement. Since there’s no waiting period, you can use it the same day if needed.

Most of my couples pick it up one to three days before their Yosemite elopement. That way, it’s already taken care of and not something they’re thinking about the morning of.

I think getting it the day before is usually the easiest option!

Sample Timeline: Getting Your Marriage License

Here’s a simple example of how this can fit into your plans:

  • Day before: Stop at the Fresno County Clerk’s Office after your flight
  • Drive into Yosemite and settle in
  • Elopement the next morning

This approach keeps your wedding day focused on the experience instead of logistics.

What Happens on Your Elopement Day

On your wedding day, your marriage license is just one small part of everything.

You’ll bring it with you, and after your ceremony, your officiant will guide you through filling it out. You’ll both sign it, along with your witness if you have a public license.

It’s pretty quick and simple. If I’m officiating for you, I’ll walk you through each step so it feels easy and stress-free.

What Happens After Your Ceremony

After your elopement, there’s one final step.

The signed license needs to be returned to

the county clerk’s office where you got it so that it can be officially recorded. This is usually handled by your officiant, and it typically needs to be mailed back within about 10 days.

Once it’s recorded, it becomes your official marriage certificate. From there, you can order certified copies for anything you need later on.

Pro tip: Take a quick photo of your signed license before it gets mailed in. It’s helpful to have a copy for your records.

Pro Tips for a Smooth Yosemite Elopement Experience

A few small details can make this process feel even easier:

  • Keep your license in a safe folder during your elopement day
  • Double-check spelling before signing anything
  • Plan your marriage license appointment into your travel timeline
  • Don’t forget to bring it with you

These are simple, but they help everything run smoothly!
