If you’re dreaming about an Upper Yosemite elopement, Elise and Andrew’s day is a perfect example of how much you can experience in just six hours. Their June elopement was centered around some of Yosemite’s most iconic high-elevation locations, including Glacier Point and Taft Point.
As a Yosemite photographer, these are the kinds of days I love documenting. Days where couples can explore incredible places while still slowing down enough to actually experience everything happening around them. From a sunrise first look and private vows at Glacier Point to a Taft Point hike, a family ceremony, and a champagne toast overlooking Yosemite Valley, Elise and Andrew had a wedding day that felt adventurous yet relaxed.
A Sunrise First Look at Glacier Point
We started early at Glacier Point, meeting just before sunrise at 5:15 AM. Elise and Andrew chose to begin their Upper Yosemite elopement with a private first look. They both got ready in the Glacier Point parking lot, which made the morning feel simple and relaxed. While Elise got ready inside my pop-up tent, I brought Andrew over to the first look location and helped him prepare for the moment.
For first looks, I typically have the groom stand with his back turned while the bride walks up and taps him on the shoulder. When he turns around and sees her for the first time, it creates such a genuine reaction. There’s something really special about having that quiet moment together before the rest of the day begins!
After their first look, Elise and Andrew shared private vows as the sun started rising over Yosemite. The light was incredible, and having that peaceful time together before their adventure began set the tone for the entire day.
Exploring Glacier Point at Sunrise
After their vows, we spent time exploring Glacier Point while the morning light was still soft. We photographed around the overlook and at the Geological Hut, taking in the views before the crowds arrived. One of the best parts about starting an Upper Yosemite elopement at sunrise is having these iconic locations feel much more peaceful and personal. The early morning light also creates a completely different look than afternoon photos. It’s softer, quieter, and has a slower feeling to it. After spending time at Glacier Point, we started the next part of their adventure, which was hiking to Taft Point.
Hiking Taft Point During Their Upper Yosemite Elopement
The Taft Point hike was one of my favorite parts of their day. This trail is a perfect addition to an Upper Yosemite elopement because it gives couples the chance to experience a little more adventure while still keeping the day relaxed. The views along the way are incredible, and arriving at Taft Point feels like such a rewarding moment.
Elise and Andrew embraced the experience fully. Elise was even tracking her steps for the day by wearing her Apple Watch around her ankle, which was such a fun detail and perfectly captured their personalities. After spending time at Taft Point, we made our way back to Glacier Point for the next part of their day.
Taking Time to Relax Before Their Ceremony
One thing I always encourage couples to consider when planning a longer elopement day is building in time to simply enjoy being married. After their hike, Elise and Andrew relaxed at the Glacier Point parking lot with breakfast and a beer on their tailgate while waiting for their ceremony time.
These moments are easy to overlook when planning a wedding day, but they’re often some of the most memorable. You don’t have to fill every minute with activities. Sometimes the best parts of your elopement are the quiet moments where you’re just sitting together, soaking everything in.
A Meaningful Family Ceremony at Glacier Point
Before their ceremony, Elise shared a special first look with her parents. Having the chance for family members to see their daughter in her wedding dress for the first time created such an emotional and meaningful moment.
Their ceremony took place at the Glacier Point Amphitheatre, surrounded by thirteen of their closest family and friends. During their ceremony, they included a sand pouring ceremony, also known as a unity sand ceremony. This tradition involves combining different colored sands into one vessel, symbolizing two lives joining together while still representing the individuality each person brings into the relationship. It was a meaningful addition to their ceremony and a beautiful way to include a symbolic moment in such a stunning location.
Ending Their Upper Yosemite Elopement with a Celebration
After their ceremony, we captured family photos, opened champagne, and celebrated together overlooking Yosemite.
They shared a toast and enjoyed a relaxed picnic with their family before ending the day with more photos at Glacier Point, including special moments with their son, Wyatt.
I love that their day included both adventure and connection. They were able to hike, explore, and experience some of Yosemite’s most incredible views while also making plenty of space for the people who mattered most.
