Yosemite National Park is one of the most unforgettable places to propose. With towering granite cliffs, peaceful meadows, powerful waterfalls, and winding rivers, it offers endless beautiful backdrops for such a special moment.
As a Yosemite proposal photographer, I’ve helped plan and photograph many surprise proposals throughout the park. One of the biggest questions people have when they start planning is simple: where should the proposal actually happen?
The truth is that Yosemite has incredible options in every corner of the park. Some locations feel dramatic and iconic, while others are quiet and intimate. The right spot depends on the experience you want to have.
If you’re still early in the planning process, I also recommend reading my guide on how to plan a surprise proposal at Yosemite National Park, where I walk through timing, logistics, and how to keep everything a surprise.
Below are some of the best locations for a surprise proposal in Yosemite.
Tunnel View
Tunnel View is one of the most recognizable viewpoints in Yosemite. From this overlook you can see El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Half Dome all in one sweeping valley view.
For proposals, this location works especially well if you want that instantly recognizable Yosemite backdrop. Many couples visit the viewpoint briefly before continuing deeper into the park, which makes it surprisingly easy to plan a proposal without drawing too much attention.
Sunrise and sunset are both beautiful here. The changing light across the valley creates a dramatic setting that feels unforgettable for such a big moment.

Glacier Point
Glacier Point offers one of the most expansive views in all of Yosemite. Standing here, you look straight out across the valley with Half Dome rising prominently in the distance.
Because it feels so vast and open, Glacier Point is perfect for proposals that feel cinematic and awe-inspiring. It’s also a great option if you want space to step away from the main viewing area and have a quieter moment together.
Sunrise here can feel incredibly peaceful, while sunset brings warm light across the granite cliffs. Both create a powerful setting for a proposal.

Taft Point
Taft Point is one of the most adventurous proposal locations in Yosemite. The viewpoint sits on the edge of the cliffs overlooking Yosemite Valley and offers incredible panoramic views.
Getting here involves a short hike, which adds a sense of anticipation to the moment. Many couples love that the proposal happens after sharing an experience together rather than simply walking up to a viewpoint.
Sunset is especially stunning at Taft Point. The warm evening light spreads across the valley below, making it one of the most dramatic proposal spots in the park.

Swinging Bridge Picnic Area
The Swinging Bridge Picnic Area is one of the most versatile locations in Yosemite Valley. It offers beautiful views of Yosemite Falls along the river while still feeling relaxed and easy to access.
For surprise proposals, this spot works well because it feels casual and natural. It’s easy to suggest a short walk along the river without giving away the plan.
Once you reach the open riverbank, the views of Yosemite Falls and the surrounding cliffs create a stunning and peaceful setting for the proposal moment.

Cook’s Meadow
Cook’s Meadow sits right in the heart of Yosemite Valley and offers some of the best open views in the park. From here you can see Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, and several surrounding granite cliffs.
The wide meadow gives plenty of space to walk and explore before choosing the right moment to propose. Early mornings here feel especially calm, with soft light across the valley and fewer visitors around.
For couples who want a beautiful natural setting without hiking, Cook’s Meadow is a wonderful option.

Valley View
Valley View is a smaller overlook along the Merced River that captures one of Yosemite’s most classic scenes. From this spot you can see El Capitan towering above the valley with Bridalveil Fall in the distance.
The river in the foreground adds a peaceful element to the setting, especially when the water reflects the surrounding cliffs.
Because it’s a quick stop along the road, Valley View works well for proposals that feel spontaneous while still delivering a breathtaking view.

Yosemite Falls
Yosemite Falls is one of the most powerful and recognizable waterfalls in the park. During the winter and spring months, the water flow becomes especially dramatic as snow melts from the surrounding mountains.
The sound of the waterfall and the mist in the air create a really memorable atmosphere for a proposal.
There are several viewing areas around Yosemite Falls, which means it’s possible to find a quiet corner even though it’s one of the park’s most popular areas.

Half Dome Meadow
Half Dome Meadow offers an open and peaceful view of one of Yosemite’s most iconic granite formations. The meadow setting gives the area a calm, natural feel compared to some of the busier viewpoints.
For proposals, it’s a great option if you want a classic Yosemite view but still want the moment to feel private.
Sunrise light here is especially beautiful! The sun casts soft colors across Half Dome and the surrounding trees.

El Capitan Meadow
El Capitan Meadow sits directly across from the massive granite wall of El Capitan. Standing here, you get a full view of the rock face rising straight up from the valley floor.
This location works beautifully for sunset proposals when the evening light warms the cliffs and the meadow begins to quiet down for the day.
It’s also fun to look for rock climbers high on the wall of El Capitan, which adds a unique Yosemite detail to the experience.

Cathedral Beach
Cathedral Beach is a peaceful riverfront area that offers stunning views of El Capitan framed by tall pine trees.
The Merced River runs alongside the beach and creates a calm and romantic setting. It feels a little removed from the busier parts of the valley.
Golden hour is especially beautiful here. The soft light through the trees and reflections on the water create a dreamy backdrop for a proposal.

Bridalveil Fall
Bridalveil Fall is one of the first waterfalls visitors see when entering Yosemite Valley, and it’s a beautiful place for a surprise proposal.
The waterfall drops gracefully from high above the cliffs, and the surrounding landscape often fills with mist when the water flow is strong.
Because it’s easy to reach and visually stunning, it works well for couples who want a proposal location that feels both iconic and accessible.

Client Reviews From Yosemite Surprise Proposals I’ve Photographed
Jon: “Alyssa was our proposal photographer in Yosemite National Park! The final pictures were amazing and captured that slight “film” look I requested before our shoot. Her communication was also excellent and prompt, as well as all the follow-up email reminders and instructions on next steps very clear. Alyssa clearly has an eye for photography and was very personable (made us very comfortable!), but beyond that, what makes working with her extra worth it was her knowledge of the park, the best time and places to go, and guidance on how to pose to look the most natural. You won’t regret going with her!”
Victor: “OMG. Alyssa was freaking incredible and such a joy to work with on my proposal photoshoot in Yosemite. She made it so easy and was so proactive about brainstorming ideas not only on location, but the detailed coordination and logistics to make the best surprise for my now-fiance.
She knows all the best spots to take photos in Yosemite Park (some spots are only known to a handful of photographers). My fiance and I felt so comfortable the whole time we took photos and Alyssa was able to bring out the best in both of us to capture the most precious moments.
I cannot recommend her highly enough for any photoshoots in California (and maybe beyond?). She will go 110% to give you the best experience possible.”
