Everything You Need to Know About a Yosemite Elopement Permit

Planning a Yosemite is a dream for so many couples! But before you elope in Yosemite National Park, there is an essential thing you must do! Secure your Yosemite elopement permit. Here’s everything you need to know about getting your Yosemite elopement permit so you can focus on making your elopement as amazing and stress free as possible.

What is a Yosemite Elopement Permit?

A special use permit is required for any elopement ceremony held within Yosemite National Park! Having this permit ensures your ceremony goes smoothly while preserving the park’s natural beauty. The permit is $150 and is non-refundable.

When and How to Apply

You can apply for your Yosemite elopement permit up to a year in advance, but make sure to submit your application at least 21 days before your elopement date. The sooner, the better, especially if you have specific locations in mind or are planning your elopement during peak seasons. Yosemite is incredibly popular, so planning ahead will help secure your desired spot.

Important Details to Include in Your Application

When filling out your application, don’t forget to mention any special needs of your guests! For example, access for elderly family members or those with disabilities. Also make sure to specify your preferred location for the ceremony and your back up location and date as well. Pick a two hour timeframe for your ceremony time. Yosemite offers a range of breathtaking spots, each with its own unique beauty! Check out all the different spots for a Yosemite elopement here!

When to Elope in Yosemite

Timing is everything! While Yosemite is stunning year-round! The best time to elope largely depends on the experience you’re seeking. Spring and fall are ideal, offering mild weather and fewer crowds. If you’re hoping for a snow-free experience with access to Glacier Point, plan your elopement between late May and early November. Weekdays are generally less crowded, giving you more privacy for your special moment. I always recommend sunrise ceremonies as well!

Additional Requirements: Marriage License and Officiant

You’ll also need a California Marriage License (about $60) and an officiant to make things official. Be sure to get these sorted ahead of time, especially if you’re coming in from out of state! Fun fact! I can also officiate your elopement!

Yosemite’s Unique Restrictions

Yosemite has specific guidelines to protect its natural and cultural resources. For instance, ceremonies are not allowed around the bases of sequoia trees, and certain areas, like meadows and riparian zones, are off limits to protect the environment. Decorations are minimal, no balloons, arches, or amplified music allowed. It’s all about keeping the park pristine for everyone to enjoy.

From smoky conditions due to wildfires to unexpected road closures and even floods, it’s essential to be flexible and prepared for any situation.
