5 Ways to Customize Your Unique Elopement to Make It You

If you’ve ever felt like elopements have to look a certain way, like they need to happen at golden hour on a mountaintop or follow a Pinterest-perfect checklist, I’m here to tell you: that’s just not true! Elopements are meant to be completely your own. They should reflect your relationship, your priorities, and your version of fun. That’s what I love most about documenting them! Helping couples build a day that’s laid-back, intentional, and full of moments that actually matter to you. So if you’re wondering how to create a unique elopement experience that doesn’t feel cookie-cutter, here are five ideas to get you started!

5 Ways to Customize Your Unique Elopement to Make It You

Choose a Location That Feels Right

There’s nothing wrong with the iconic spots (hi, Yosemite), but the best locations are the ones that mean something to you. Whether it’s the first trail you hiked together, the lake where you got engaged, or just a new place that fits your vibe! Let that guide your decision. I’ve photographed couples that chose Yosemite because it was the first place they hiked together! Others have chosen a quiet riverside for its calm and privacy. Don’t stress about what’s “popular”, go with what makes you feel connected.

Exchange Private Vows or Letters

Whether you read them aloud or write them for each other to keep, personal vows add so much depth to your elopement. They don’t need to be formal! Just real. If you’re more private, consider sharing letters during your first look or somewhere quiet before the ceremony. It’s such a peaceful way to connect before the rest of the day unfolds!

Include a Personal Ritual or Tradition

One of the best things about eloping? You get to make your own rules. Consider including a culture or a spiritual tradition. Want to light a candle together, have a tea ceremony, or toast with your favorite wine after vows? Go for it! These little rituals make your elopement feel layered and meaningful. Even something simple like gifting each other a letter or having a first dance can become the moment you remember most!

Add a Few of Your Favorite Things

The details don’t have to be fancy to matter. Bring your dog. Hike in your favorite boots. Go for a bike ride in the Valley or share coffee before your ceremony. Or even create a playlist and dance to your song at sunset! Your elopement should feel like you, whether that’s silly, romantic, or chill. These are the moments that stick forever!

Build a Timeline Around What You Want

There’s no need to follow a traditional timeline! Elopements are flexible on purpose. So if you want to start the day with a sunrise hike, take a mid-day nap, or end with stargazing? DO IT!  As your Yosemite elopement photographer, I can help you create the PERFECT timeline for your dream day. Your timeline should feel like a flow, not a checklist. When you work with me, I help you design something that gives you space to breathe, explore, and actually enjoy every second!
